Community college students should never have to choose between paying for tuition and basic human needs such as weather-appropriate clothing and healthy foods. Navigating the rigors of higher education is already challenging; managing food insecurity and a lack of basic necessities makes earning a degree almost impossible. The very first event My Tia's Place put on was a Sock-A-Thon (hosted by Ms. Wanda Reyes-Dawes at CT State Community College Manchester), and connecting community college students with needs such as essential clothing continues to be one of our paramount initiatives.
We accept donations of everyday apparel, undergarments, socks and footwear, and seasonally-appropriate outerwear to help students stay comfortable (especially during Connecticut's frigid winter months). We are also seeking donations of professional attire to ensure our students look and feel confident during job interviews and career fairs.
We accept donations of food items such as easy-to-prepare meals, canned goods, and healthy snacks that students can quickly eat between classes. Additionally, we accept everyday personal care items such as soap, shampoo, deodorant, and dental care products, as well as feminine hygiene products, to help students maintain their personal well-being.
